Harvest getting closer

Harvest is getting closer in the Central Plains. The wheat has lost about all of its green color here in South Central Kansas and the heads are starting to dry down. It has been higher humidity due to some recent showers, but given the forcast for temperatures into the 90's, I wouldn't doubt we could see harvesting in Kansas before the end of this weekend. Unfortunately, I am not looking forward to the harvest of this crop, drought conditions have been tough on the crop in the Central part of Kansas. South West Kansas is beyond tough, its not often that even the pastures have failed to green up by the first of June.

North of I-70, the Seed Associates I have talked with are at least thinking they might have an average wheat crop, with recent good moisture. Conditions for the most part get better as you go north and to some extent west. These regions have gotten some much need rain, and the crop is still at a stage where it can benefit from the rains. Still in these areas there are areas where stands are fair to poor and the top end yield potential is still about average.

Field days have given me an opportunity to talk with lots of producers about wheat management. There is considerable interest and action in managing wheat at a higher yield level. Syngenta is making the investments in research and has both current and future products, to help growers take their wheat management to the next level. It is exciting times to be working with wheat growers.
