Its hot!
Warmer weather has returned after a few weeks of cool conditions. Dry conditions continue, with expansion continuing to the east and north. Here where I live in south-central Kansas, it was 103 F on Sunday and 99 F today, with plenty of Kansas wind. The wheat is suffering but certainly a tough crop. It needs relief soon.
Warmer weather this week has helped advance the wheat in NW Kansas and the rest of the high plains. Abandonment in some areas of Kansas will be higher than normal this year, it's yet to be seen how high.
Barley yellow dwarf is fairly common in SC KS and NC Oklahoma this year. This is the third year in a row that is has been unusually wide spread and at a high incidence. Growers will want to consider the high rate of Cruiser next year if planting early. At current wheat prices and heavy BYD infection rates, it would have paid the past three years.
I hope that later this week I can report that we have recieved much needed moisture acrosst the Southern and Central Plains, keep your fingers crossed.
