Wheat Plot tours starting

Wheat Plot tours are starting in Kansas.  It is always good to get out and look at the varieties in a lot of different conditions. Yesterday, driving about 100 miles in Southern Kansas, there were fields that looked like they could yield anywhere from 5 to 30 bu acre. Overall, as one person said, the best fields are still going to be below average. It still amazes me that some of the wheat is holding on like it is, but there are also fields that are done.

I am pleased with how the AgriPro varieties look this year. Art, CJ, Jackpot and Greer look to be holding their own or better. There is a lot of variability in plots this year so producers should use the results with care.

Barley yellow dwarf is again probably the disease of most concern in my area. Producers are starting to ask questions about Cruiser® seed treatment.

If I looked in the plots hard enough, I could find a few pustuals of leaf rust on the known susceptible varieties. While this likely will not be a big concern here, wheat producers to the north and west might take note. The weather forecast is calling for rain and warmer temperatures here, which could increase the leaf rust enough to cause problems for those to the north of us. With todays price of wheat, it doesn't take many bushels to double your money on a Quilt® application.

At one of the plot tours, there was a good testimonial from a producer that used AP503 CL2 for winter annual grass control, including feral rye. He apparently was impressed with the control he had.

Heading to a wheat plot tour in the Southern Plains, will report later this week.
